Allen-less Sonics get past Wolves 85-82

Figuring out how to win close games has remained a season-long struggle for the Seattle SuperSonics. The Sonics solved that problem on Friday night. And this victory might be their most unexpected. Trailing by nine with 4 minutes left, and playing without All-Star Ray Allen, Seattle used a late flurry and key baskets from Rashard Lewis to stun the Minnesota Timberwolves 85-82.

Even before they heard coach Roy Williams hollering, Brandan Wright and his North Carolina teammates could tell they were in big trouble. Down by 16 points early in the second half, the top-seeded Tar Heels suddenly shifted into another gear. Fueled by a huge run, they pulled off their biggest rally of the season and beat Southern California 74-64 Friday night in the East Regional semifinals.

Oilers snap 12-game winless streak

Winless for an entire month, and closing in on a record for futility, the Edmonton Oilers finally had reason to celebrate, snapping a 12-game winless skid with a 4-3 shootout victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night. Colorado's loss also meant that the idle Detroit Red Wings clinched a playoff spot.

The San Antonio Spurs thought their latest victory should have been an easier one. "We didn't execute as well," Manu Ginobili said after the Spurs' beat the Detroit Pistons 90-89 Friday night. "We should have finished five or six points ahead instead of two or three." Tony Parker led San Antonio with 22 points, Tim Duncan added 17 points and 14 rebounds and Brent Barry had 16 points.
