Monarchs 72, Sparks 58

Playing aggressive defense, the Sacramento Monarchs took the Los Angeles Sparks out of their game. Yolanda Griffith scored 15 points to lead the Monarchs into the WNBA finals for the second straight season with a 72-58 victory over the Sparks on Saturday night. The Sparks were held to 37 percent shooting for the game and got outrebounded 40-25.

Sun 77, Shock 68

The Connecticut Sun got their offensive rhythm back and an emotional lift from Katie Douglas. The All-Star game MVP returned to the starting lineup despite a hairline fracture in her right foot to spark the Sun to a 77-68 win over the Detroit Shock on Saturday, extending the Eastern Conference finals to a deciding third game.

Sparks face must-win situation at home away from home

Although the Los Angeles Sparks earned the homecourt advantage over Sacramento in the WNBA's Western Conference Finals, they won't be able to take advantage of it when they play at "home" Saturday night. The Sparks are the home team, but Game 2 in the best-of-three series will be at Arrowhead Pond, some 35 miles from the Staples Center, which has a previous booking.

Offense lacking at critical time for Connecticut

They've missed more than 50 shots the last two games and face elimination from the Eastern Conference finals Saturday when they host the Detroit Shock, who have a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.

Bill Laimbeer is fond of referring to Cheryl Ford as a "beast". Even Laimbeer was surprised at the performance of his All-Star power forward on Thursday. Ford pulled down a postseason-record 23 rebounds and scored 11 points as the Detroit Shock beat the Connecticut Sun 70-59 in Game 1 of the WNBA Eastern Conference final.

Sun face challenging series against Shock

The Connecticut Sun were supposed to be cruising toward a third straight appearance in the WNBA finals. Connecticut's task doesn't seem so easy anymore. The Los Angeles Sparks are playing on for the first time in three years. Lisa Leslie and Temeka Johnson scored 14 points each, helping the Sparks outlast the Seattle Storm 68-63 Tuesday night in the deciding game of their WNBA playoff series. "We did it with defense and making free throws down the stretch," Los Angeles coach Joe Bryant said.
