Staley ends pro playing career in Houston's WNBA loss

Dawn Staley thinks she'll never really be finished with basketball. She's simply done playing, now that the Houston Comets are out of the WNBA playoffs. Staley, the veteran point guard who's been a star since her first Philadelphia high school season, officially finished her career in Houston's 92-64 loss to the Sacramento Monarchs on Saturday.

Catchings helped to locker room during Fever playoff game

WNBA All-Star Tamika Catchings was helped to the Indiana locker room after her head struck the floor during the third quarter of the Fever's playoff game against the Detroit Shock on Saturday. Catchings and Plenette Pierson were going for a loose ball when Catchings fell out of bounds and landed heavily on her back.

Sacramento's Buescher wins WNBA's most improved player award

Sacramento center Erin Buescher won the WNBA's most improved player award Saturday before the Monarchs' playoff game against the Houston Comets. Buescher, a fifth-year pro, averaged 9.7 points and 3.0 rebounds per game as a key reserve on the Monarchs' thin bench. She also filled in extensively until DeMya Walker, the Monarchs' leading scorer last season, returned from maternity leave.

Lauren Jackson gingerly walked out of the Seattle Storm locker room on the ball of her aching left foot. Ice was under the foot's arch, site of the 2003 MVP's plantar fasciitis. She had another ice bag hanging off her lower left leg, for shin splints. "Piggyback!" Jackson playfully asked teammate Janell Burse, putting her arm around on Burse's own ice bag resting on her left shoulder.

Katie Douglas and the Connecticut Sun used a team effort to shutdown Alana Beard and take a 1-0 lead in their Eastern Conference series against the Washington Mystics. All-Star guard Lindsay Whalen had a season-high 22 points and All-Star MVP Douglas added 17 to lead the Sun to a 76-61 victory over the Mystics on Friday night.

Deanna Nolan scored 18 points and Katie Smith added 17 to help Detroit beat Indiana 68-56 on Thursday night and take a 1-0 lead in its Eastern Conference playoff series. Nolan was 9-for-11 from the field, constantly getting free for open jumpers at the top of the key. She scored six points during a key 13-0 run.

She scored 18 points and Katie Smith added 17 to lead Detroit to a 68-56 win and a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three Eastern Conference series. "I think it pumps us up and gives us more confidence, makes us more focused and intense," Nolan said of Laimbeer's prediction.
