Rested Serena ready for Sony Ericsson

Her scheduling has long been unorthodox, but as she showed at the Australian Open in January, a rusty Williams still can dominate. Henman rejoins Britain's Davis Cup squad

Tim Henman has rescinded his retirement from the Davis Cup and was named in Britain's team for next month's match against the Netherlands. Captain John Lloyd said Friday that Henman was in the six-man squad for the Europe/Africa Zone Group One match in Birmingham. Henman will be joined by debutants Jamie Murray and Richard Bloomfield, along with Andy Murray, Greg Rusedski and Jamie Baker.

Retiring Clijsters heads to Key Biscayne

At age 23, Kim Clijsters has decided to ease up on her tournament routine to make more time for shopping and nice meals so she can enjoy each city she visits. It's a sort of phased retirement. The former U.S. Open champion plans to call it quits and focus on family after playing an abbreviated schedule this year.

ATP votes to drop round-robin format

The ATP Board voted to eliminate the round-robin format that led to an embarrassing flip-flop in the interpretation of results at a Las Vegas tournament this month. Remaining events that had planned to try round-robin will instead revert to the single-elimination format used at Grand Slam events and most other tournaments, the ATP said Wednesday.

Roddick, Blake named to Davis Cup team

Andy Roddick and James Blake were selected Wednesday for the U.S. Davis Cup team that will face Rafael Nadal and Spain on an indoor hardcourt in next month's quarterfinal. Captain Patrick McEnroe will also go with the world's top-ranked doubles team of brothers Bob and Mike Bryan in the best-of-five event in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The No. 1 player wasn't even the most popular in his own group Wednesday, and that was OK with Tiger Woods. Roger Federer came out to watch him play Doral. "It's pretty neat when you have probably the most dominant athlete on the planet out there in your gallery," Woods said after his practice round for the CA Championship, where he is the two-time defending champion.

Mauresmo out a month due to appendectomy

Amelie Mauresmo had an appendectomy and is expected to be sidelined a month. The fourth-ranked Frenchwoman underwent surgery in Paris. She had a stomach ache for several days before a sonogram indicated the need to remove her appendix, her Web site said. "The operation went well and all that's left for me is to wait patiently," Mauresmo said.

Blake commits to play Pilot Pen

Connecticut's biggest tennis star has committed to playing in the 2007 Pilot Pen. James Blake, who is ranked No. 8 in the world, becomes the first big name to announce he will play in the tournament, which runs Aug. 19-25 at the Connecticut Tennis Center. Blake, of Fairfield, won the tournament in 2005.

Federer, Woods both in Miami this week

MIAMI (AP) -Tiger Woods and Roger Federer go about their business in different ways. Federer carries his own bag but has someone pick up his balls. Woods has someone carry his bag but picks up his own balls. Unlike Federer, Woods rarely comes up with an ace, has no backhand and tries to be sub-par. Federer's driver only drops him off at tournaments; Woods' driver helps him win tournaments.

Clijsters doubts she will play U.S. Open

Don't expect too much from Kim Clijsters during her farewell season. After pulling out of the French Open, the Belgian announced she also might drop the U.S. Open from her schedule because her honeymoon with American basketball player Brian Lynch is just weeks before the Aug. 27-Sept. 9 Grand Slam tennis tournament.
