Russia to shut down Svobodny space centre

Photo dated December 2006 shows a Soyuz 2-1B rocket carrying a French-made spacecraft taking off from Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 Moscow lost its Baikonur base and has since been forced to rent it.
