Lane weakens after lashing Mexico coast

This NOAA satellite image taken Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006 at 02:00 PM EDT shows considerable cloudiness in the Intermountain West and Northern Rockies.  A trough of low pressure brought cold air into the region and the season's first snowstorm.  Winter Storm Warnings will remain in effect through Sunday morning for some counties in Montana and Utah.  Clouds near the west coast of Mexico are associated with Hurricane Lane.  The storm passed Mazatlan last night and is current making landfall. Florence strengthens into hurricane

In an infrared (IR) image cold clouds are high clouds, so the colors typically highlight the colder regions. For IR images, the bar on the right side of the image indicates the pixel brightness values for the corresponding color. At 5 am EDT the center of Hurricane Florence was located about 320 miles south of Bermuda moving toward the north-northwest at 15 MPH. Maximum sustained winds increased to near 80 MPH according to forecasters with additional strengthening expected over the next 24 hours.
